Getting into Santorini

Santorini is just a 30 minute flight away from Athens. The famous European cheap airline Ryan Air (www.ryanair.com) operates in this line. Once you have reached the airport (IATA: JTR), you can hop onto a public transport directly to Oia, or roam around the island. Alternatively, it is possible to reach the island using one of the numerous ferry services, which is quite an experience by itself. The one way ticket for public transport in Santorini costs around 2.20 euro. Unlike the rest of Europe, there is no day or weekly card available.

Things to see and do in Santorini

Santorini is the site for one of the largest volcanic eruption in human recorded history. This Cycladic island is famous for its cliffside views, which originated from the volcanic ash. But the view is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many other highlights. That includes an ancient archeological site, beach holiday, amazing wine and seafood, or just experiencing Greek hospitality. In the southwestern part of the island, there is the archeological site of Akrotiri, where you can learn about the Bronze Age Minoan civilization around 2000 BCE. From Akrotiri, you can walk to Red Beach or Black Beach to get a tan.
Probably the most famous site here is Oia, in the northwestern part of the island. It is also the main tourist attraction. This place is jam-packed with numerous cafés, restaurants, hotels and villas. But it is also the most picturesque place on the island. There are several sites in Oia, which are ideal for sunset viewing.

Insider tips

  • In summer, Santorini is too crowded and expensive. If you want to experience in your own pace, it’s better to plan for a winter vacation. The temperature is still not too cold and it is also budget friendly.
  • Be a little bit cautious when you order salad in the restaurants. Sometimes, they are not so fresh and clean.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen as it can be really hot and humid in Summer.
